Samsung Beat for T-Mobile Cell Phone Review - Battery Life

Call Time (4.06)
The Beat toughed out a never-ending phone call for 3 hours, 23 minutes. This is slightly less than average; typically phones can stomach between four and five hours of call time. In the case of the Beat, this subpar performance is compounded by its music centricity. Music-oriented handset need to be able to constantly play back music while maintaining the ability to place a phone call after. Two factors work in the Beat's favor. For one, it's an entry-level handset, which gives it a low bar to begin with. It also has a good music playback time. While you won't be able to listen to music the whole day without a charge and still expect to be able to make a phone call, it performs well enough for a phone in its class.

Cell Phone Talk Time Score
Samsung Beat 3 hours, 23 minutes 4.06
Razr2 V8 3 hours, 15 minutes 3.90
Samsung Blast 4 hours, 3 minutes 4.86
Samsung SLM 5 hours, 20 minutes
6.40
Motorola W385 2 hours, 43 minutes 3.26
Samsung Juke 3 hours, 30 minutes 4.20

Music Playback (5.45)
Music playback is the Beat's bread and butter, so it's appropriate that it performed better than average on the music playback battery test. A good battery life is essential for a media-oriented handset, because it needs to both fulfill the duties of a dedicated media player and have battery left over to make calls. As it stands, the Beat will be able to last you on a coast-to-coast flight and give you enough juice to make a few calls once you land.

Cell Phone Music Playback Time Score
Samsung Beat 7 hours, 34 minutes 5.45
Razr2 V8 4 hours, 37 minutes 3.32
Samsung Blast 9 hours, 37 minutes 6.92
Samsung SLM 15 hours, 4 minutes 10.85
Motorola W385 N/A: Can't play music. 0.0
Samsung Juke 7 hours, 45 minutes 5.58

Web Browsing (2.68)
The Beat's browser could only chug along for 2 hours, 14 minutes before hitting the skids. This is a very poor time, exacerbated by the eternity it takes to browse to a page in the first place. This score simply rounds out an all around bad browsing experience. It'll come through in a pinch, but please don't use the Beat's internet for anything other than emergencies.

Cell Phone Browsing Time Score
Samsung Beat 2 hours, 14 minutes 2.68
Razr2 V8 1 hour, 31 minutes
1.82
Samsung Blast 4 hours, 23 minutes
5.26
Samsung SLM 2 hours, 57 minutes
3.54
Motorola W385 N/A: Couldn't perform test 0.0
Samsung Juke N/A: No browser 0.0

Idle Time unscored
We don't score idle time, because it would get months to get a suitable data set. Samsung boasts the Beat can idle for 250 hours, which seems a bit excessive. We doubt it'd last more than a week.
