Palm Treo 750 Cell Phone Review - Value & Comparisons

Value (2.0)
The Treo 750 is available from Cingular for $399.99 with a two year contract or $649.99 without. This is at the high end of cost for a smart phone, and although we liked the Treo 750 we aren’t sure that it is worth $400 out of pocket when alternatives like the Samsung Blackjack are available for half the price. We find the out of contract price to be frankly ridiculous. It should be noted that the 750 has only been out for a couple of months and we expect the price to drop over time, although you should not expect to be picking it up for free any time soon.

Comparisons
Blackberry 8700 - The Treo 750 and the Blackberry 8700 share many things, including solid integration with corporate environments and very usable QWERTY keyboard. However, in terms of everyday use there is no comparison, the Blackberry platform is simply much more simple and intuitive. Whether that is a plus for you or not is the question. The Treo 750 is going to bring much more functionality than the Blackberry 8700 can, but the Blackberry does less extremely well.

Treo 680 - The Treo 750's palm cousin again shared a great deal with the 750 in terms of form factor and technology. The key differences are under the hood where Windows Mobile 5 replaces Palm OS. Although Palm OS continues to be extremely easy to use and learn, we do have to admit that it is falling behind in terms of technologies, for example the 680 does not support 3G. Of course with more power often comes complications, and Windows Mobile 5 has a steep learning curve.

Motorola Q - In many ways the Motorola Q may represent the greatest threat to the Treo line of phones. While Palm has been making small incremental changes to their lineup the Q launched a whole new category of smart device that some might argue leaves the Treo in the dust in terms of portability and looks. Of course the Treo 750 runs the much more full features Pocket PC version of Windows Mobile 5, but many people will look at the Q and its clones (T-Mobile Dash and Samsung Blackjack) and wonder why they should pay $200 more for a fatter and heavier device.
