28th Nov 07 – The final piece of the iPhone pricing puzzle has fallen into place in Europe: the French network Orange announced that it will be offering the iPhone to its customers for €649 Euros (approx $963) from today. But unlike the other European networks that are carrying the phone, Orange will be allowing their users to unlock the iPhone for an additional €100 (approx $149). Orange are also offering the iPhone to their existing customers for €399. The calling plans for the iPhone start at €49 a month. The iPhone has been on sale in several European countries for some time, but the prices and policies of the carriers for unlocking differ widely. The UK carrier O2 has been selling the iPhone for several weeks for UKP 256 (approx $556), but has not yet set an unlocking policy; users are restricted to using the UK iPhone with O2.
In Germany, the iPhone is being sold by T-Mobile for €399 (approx $592), but that is under threat from legal action by rival network Vodafone, who are claiming that selling a locked iPhone with a 2-year contract requirement is against German laws on cell phone competition. Although the legal action has not yet been resolved, T-Mobile has responded by selling unlocked iPhones for a hefty €999 (approx $1483). However, some companies have jumped on this as an opportunity: the Debitel network is offering customers who buy the unlocked iPhone a €600 bonus if they then sign up with their service.
