iPhone Buyers Were Mostly Treo Users, Claims Report

15th October 07 - A new report from NPD claims that iPhone buyers were 10 times more likely to have previously owned a Palm Treo than any other phone, but that BlackBerry users were no more likely to have switched to the iPhone than other users.

“The iPhone’s Internet and media capabilities have resonated with consumers -- especially those who previously owned Treos and Sidekicks,” claims report author Ross Rubin. He also speculates that the seeming lack of enthusiasm for the iPhone amongst BlackBerry users is because the iPhone does not currently offer the same level of corporate email support that BlackBerry devices do; there is no easy way to connect an iPhone to an Exchange mail server, for instance.

The report aloso claims that those who switched from other carriers to AT&T to get an iPhone were three times more likely to come from Alltell and T-Mobile than from Sprint an Verizon. Although plenty of people did swtich from Sprint and Verizon, the report speculates that fewer did because these networks already offer over the air video and 3G data services that provide a more compelling reason to stay; neither Alltell or T-Mobile currently offer fast 3G data services.

The report is based on surveys of 13,00 cell phone users, with 200 iPhone users.
