iPhone 3G vs. iPhone: Head to Head

You'd better be ready for some no-holds-barred, iPhone-next-to-iPhone action, because, brother, that's exactly what you'll find here. Here we literally pit iPhone against iPhone and then take pictures and then talk about those pictures.

Round 1: iPhone 3G Front vs. Original iPhone Front

This round is too close to call because the phones look virtually identical. The iPhone 3G on the left has a silvery speaker, a less bold menu button icon, and its volume and lock keys are so brightly lit in this photo that they're nearly invisible. Will these traits give it the advantage in a later bout?

Round 2: iPhone 3G vs. Original iPhone: Back2Back

The iPhone 3G has an ergonomically curved back, which will make your hands happy. It's also glossy, so you're going to make it look gross with your greasy hands. Our hands aren't greasy at all, but they are weak and easily fatigued. We therefore declare the iPhone 3G the winner of this round.

Round 3: iPhone 3G Mic Port vs. Original iPhone Mic Port

This one is a much easier call. The new iPhone doesn't have a recessed port, which should be good for users who like to be able to use their headphones without purchasing a special adapter. The original iPhone's headphone jack lay at the bottom of a haunted mine shaft. We think the new design is an improvement.

Round 4: The iPhone has put on a little weight.

Here is where original iPhone fans will call the 3G "TUBB-O," or a "HUSKY HANDSET," or one of another finely crafted witticisms based on its girth. Perhaps the "iFat." Regardless, yes, the iPhone's fame looks like it's brought some stress eating with it. Some people, us included, like a phone with some meat on it.

WINNER?
Strictly in terms of its physicality, we like the iPhone 3G better. If you want to learn more about this popular device, you could read our ridiculously in-depth review.
