Who's It For
Business User
Business users will find a lot to like on the SMT5800 in terms of both hardware and software. This makes sense, because business users are the phone's target demographic. Unfortunately, professionals are also the group most hurt by the phone's lack of a battery life. Many business users won't have the luxury of either constantly charging their phone or having their handset die on them. Therefore, we recommend all business users buy this phone with caution.
Budget Callers
Budget callers will see three digits and move on.
Chatty Teenager
Chatty teens will probably think this phone is boring because isn't neon yellow and doesn't have iTunes. The QWERTY will aid their rampant texting, but they'll feel like a grandpa with this thing.
Media Maven
Media mavens will find either inadequate or average media support.
Conclusion
The SMT5800 is a great little device that suffers from a fatal flaw. If it even had average battery life, then it'd be a nicer-looking version of the Palm Centro or Motorola Q 9m, which puts the burden of judging value square on the shoulders of the buyer. As it is, however, the user will have to pay dearly for the advantages of a professional-looking facade, both out of pocket and with battery life. For most we expect this will be too high a cost; two and a half hours of talk time begins to become a mobility issue, since heavy talkers probably won't be able to last the whole day without charging. Even if you've got a desk job where constantly charging the phone isn't much of an issue, we'd still recommend checking out alternatives. | Previous Next | |
