25th July 2007 - Verizon has just added the ability for all of their users with MMS video capable phones to upload videos to the popular video sharing site YouTube. If a Verizon user adds their cell phone number to their YouTube account, they can now upload a video from their Verizon phone by simply shooting the video and sending it to 98823 (which spells YTUBE) as an MMS message. This is not the first time that mobile users have been able to upload videos to YouTube; Helio announced the ability for users to upload videos directly from their devices recently. And the ability to upload to YouTube via MMS is not new; YouTube announced this in May. However, Verizon is the first carrier to directly support this and integrate it into their network; previously, users had to create a mobile identity and send the videos to a unique address. The new service is easier to use.
However, it still has some serious limitations; given that Verizon limits MMS video messages to 15 seconds and that most cell phones shoot only low resolution, heavily compressed video for MMS messages, the uploaded videos are going to be low resolution and poor quality. But it does provide a quick and easy way to upload videos if you happen to spot a celebrity walking down the street.
