Verizon Wireless yesterday announced that it will be joining the growing number of wireless operators to offer unlimited text messaging packages. Verizon's new offerings include individual plans starting at $59.99 and family plans starting at $99.99 that include unlimited messaging for all lines.

With the growth of text messaging in the United States wireless carriers have begun to roll out unlimited text messaging plans for users that can send thousands of messages a month. Verizon's new plans include not only unlimited text messages but also unlimited multimedia messages that can be used to send pictures and short video clips and unlimited instant messaging. Verizon's new offerings for individuals is a premium of $20 per month over the basic plan that does not include a text messaging option.

Carriers are experimenting with various unlimited services. Sprint is currently testing a plan in select areas that includes unlimited calls, messaging and data for $120 a month. As users use their devices to access network services such plans may become more popular as a way to avoid overage charges.
