T-Mobile Wing Review - Value & Comparisons

Value (6.0)
As of the time of this writing, the T-Mobile Wing is available from T-Mobile's website for $299.99 with a two year contract and a $50 mail in rebate. $300 is a reasonable price for a phone that offers the Wing's capabilities. It is about twice the price of the excellent T-Mobile Dash however, and buyers will have to decide if the presence of a touch screen, notes and better tasks and office programs are worth the extra price. Compared to other similar devices, all of the carriers have a Windows Mobile device in this form factor, the Wings looks better as it is $100 less expensive than the AT&T 8525 or Sprint PPC 6700, and the same price as the Verizon XV6700. Of course you should add $200 for the out of contract price, which is much less reasonable.

Comparisons

Treo 750
- The T-Mobile Wing compares well in terms of functionality with the Treo 750. The form factors are obviously different and it's matter of personal preference. The Treo 750 supports tri-band 3G, which is a very nice feature, but the Wing comes back with Wi-Fi support, which the Treo lacks. The one distinguishing feature for us is that the Treo 750 is a fairly responsive device while the Wing is decidedly not. On the other hand the Wing has incredible battery life while the Treo 750's talk and browsing times were sub par.

BlackBerry 8800
- The differences between the BlackBerry and Windows Mobile platform are shrinking as RIM adds multimedia features to BlackBerry devices, however the multimedia features of the Wing are still head and shoulders above the 8800. The Wing has a camera, while the 8800 does not, although that may or may not be a bonus depending on your workplace. We should again mention that the Wing has Wi-Fi, which the 8800 lacks, and the form factors are obviously different. What it really might come down to however is the responsiveness of the interface, and here the 8800 beats out the Wing by a wide margin.

T-Mobile Dash
- If you are a T-Mobile customer looking at smart phones, you are probably considering these two phones. With the update for the Dash both are running Windows Mobile 6, albeit different version. This means that with the Wing you will get a touch screen, notes application and more complete tasks and office document applications. The other obvious difference is the form factor, with the Dash a much smaller and slimmer device with an always on keyboard. Battery life is good on the Dash, but its outstanding on the Wing. Again the biggest difference is the reponsiveness of the device, with the Dash a reasonably responsive device while the Wing is furstratingly laggy.
