Front Closed

From the front the T-Mobile Dash is dominated by a large 2.8" QVGA (240 x 320 pixel) display. Above the display is the T-Mobile brand and the phone speaker. Below the screen are the phone controls. In the center is a circular directional pad. To the left is a soft key, dedicated start key and the send key. To the right of the D-Pad is another soft key, dedicated OK key, and the end key.

Front Open

When you open up the Wing, the screen reorients itself, and it reveals a roomy QWERTY keyboard.

Left

On the left near the top is a dedicated camera key. Nearer the center is a sliding volume control and just beneath it the Micro SD slot. This is protected by a soft rubber cover that is attached to the device. At the bottom, you see a lanyard loop.

Top

The only thing on the top of the device is the power button.

Bottom

The bottom of the Wing houses a Mini USB port just off center towards the right. Next to it, on the right, is the microphone.

Right

The right side of the T-Mobile Wing has two buttons towards the top. The upper button launches voice command, while the one below it opens the messaging application. Near the bottom, you see the slot that holds the rather short stylus.

Back

The back of the Wing houses the 2-megapixel camera in the upper right. Just above the camera lens is a self portrait mirror. Above and to the left of the camera is a speaker and in the upper left the external antenna port.

Battery Out

The back cover of the Wing comes off all in one piece by pushing up on it. Removing the cover reveals the 1350 mAh battery and just above it the SIM card slot.

In the Box (6.5)

The T-Mobile Wing ships with a good selection of accessories. In addition to a rather thick manual and software CD, you get a charger, additional stylus, carrying case with belt clip, stereo headphones, and a splitter that allows you to plug in both the headphones and charger at the same time.

Handling (5.0)
The T-Mobile Wing is a large phone, and it's also heavy at 6 ounces. However, it does have a slimmer form factor than its predecessor, the T-Mobile MDA or its cousin the AT&T 8525. The soft touch paint that covers the phone helps the phone stay in your hand without slipping. We found that the controls are located rather low on the device for comfortable use as most of the weight of the phone sits above them. Using the roomy QWERTY keyboard when it's open is much more comfortable, although of course you will need to use two hands in this position. Because of its weight the Wing may be uncomfortable to hold up to your head for long phone calls, you may want to use the included headset if you are going to be on a long call.

Portability (5.0)
Because of its slimmer form factor the T-Mobile Wing will fit more comfortably into a pants pocket than the older T-Mobile MDA. If you like wearing tight pants though, you may want to consider using the included belt case. It should also fit comfortably into most bags; however it will weigh you down quite a bit no matter where you carry it.

Aesthetics (5.5)
We like the T-Mobile Wing's looks better than the older T-Mobile MDA, especially the blue soft touch paint and the thinner form factor. Still, it isn't a fashion phone by any means, and those looking for slim and sexy should look at sleeker, sexier phones like the Razr or the Krzr.

Durability (6.0)
The T-Mobile Wing feels solid and well constructed. We did not notices any creaks or loose bits. We are always concerned about phones that have moving parts however, and the Wing's slide out QWERTY keyboard is no exception. Unlike the T-Mobile MDA, the Wing's sliding mechanism is spring mounted. This may make it easier to open and close it, but it also means more parts that can break. When holding it, we found that the top part of the slider moved slightly whenever pressed, which may put more pressure on the mechanism. Other than this issue, the Wing seems very well constructed.
