22 May 2007- T-Mobile has just announced the T-Mobile Wing, a Windows Mobile 6 handset with a full QWERTY keyboard that slides out from underneath the 2.8-inch, 240 x 320 pixel screen. Priced at $299 (with a two-year contract), the new handset is available today. The Wing is designed and manufactured by HTC, who also built the Dash. It’s a pretty small handset, measuring 2.3 by 4.3 by just 0.7 inches thick. It weighs a lightweight 6 ounces. It comes coated in a new soft-touch case, which is more comfortable to hold than the smooth, shiny exteriors we usually see on phones. The Wing has a decent (if unspectacular) set of features; it includes a 2 megapixel camera (with 8x digital zoom) and a MicroSD memory card slot. On the software side, the new handset is running Windows Mobile 6, the latest version of Microsoft’s mobile operating system, running on a 200MHz . For business users, this includes support for viewing and editing Microsoft Office documents, plus push email from Exchange servers and Hotmail.
The Wing also supports T-Mobile’s myFaves service, which allows the user to pick five numbers that they can call for free; wired or wireless. Support is also offered for four instant messaging services out of the box; AIM, Yahoo!, Windows Live and ICQ. Voice dialing and voice commands are also supported.
It includes an 802.11g WiFi radio, and supports the 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 GSM bands, so it can connect to GSM networks in the US and worldwide, as well as WiFi hotspots. Missing, however is any 3G radio; the fastest data connection is EDGE, which maxes out at less then 200kbps. T-Mobile claims a talk time of up to 5 hours and a standby time of up to 200 hours. The Wing is supposed to be available today, but at the time of writing, it is not listed on the T-Mobile site.
