27th June 2007 - T-Mobile has just launched a new service that combines cellular calling with WiFi. Their T-Mobile@Home service offers unlimited calling from home over a DSL or Cable Internet connection, or from any T-Mobile hotspot for a monthly fee. When the user is out of WiFi range, the calls are carried on the T-Mobile wireless network. The new service requires a cell phone that supports calling over WiFi, but T-Mobile are offering two new phones that support it: the $49.99 Samsung t409 and Nokia 6086.

T-Mobile claims that the new service will work with any high-speed domestic DSL or cable connection and any router, but they sell two routers that are configured to work with the service, and which make the process of conencting the phone easuer. These cost $49.99, but there is a mail-in rebate that reduces this cost to zero if you subscribe to the service.

The new service costs an additional $9.99 a month for a single line, or $19.99 for up to five lines on a family plan with a two-year contract. One interesting aspect of the service is that it supports seamless switching between the WiFi and cellular calling; you can start a call at home or at a hotspot on WiFi, then walk away and the service will handle swithching the call from the WiFi over to the cellular network automatically.

The T-Mobile@home service is available now nationwide. More details are available on the T-Mobile web site for the service.
