1st Oct 07 – T-Mobile's latest handset is the Samsung Beat, a bargain basement music-focussed device. Bundled with a 1GB micro SD memory card, the Beat (aka the SGH-i539) can play back MP3, WMA and AAC/AAC+ music, and supports Bluetooth headphones. The Beat is available now for $99.99 (after a $50 mail-in rebate) with a 2-year contract.
The Beat is a small flip phone, at just 3.54 by 1.8 by 2.7 inches, with a set of external music controls, display and speaker on the outside front that mean you can control the music without opening up the case. It weighs a lightweight 2.7 ounces, so it would easily fit into a pocket or small bag. A 1.3 megapixel camera that can also capture video is also included.
The Beat is a quad-band GSM phone (so it would work on any international GSM network) with EDGE data support, but no 3G data. At the moment, T-Mobile does not offer a 3G data network; they are still in the process of rolling out their 3G network on the 1.7GHz band. The Beat is available from T-mobile now for $99.99 (after a $50 mail-in rebate) with a 2-year contract.
