iFixit is keeping the public updated on their home page as they disassemble the iPhone and review the inner workings of the mysterious device.

They have finally gotten the iPhone apart, although they admit that it was a little tricky to figure out how. They first removed the black antenna plate, exposing the grounding screw on the back panel that holds the antenna cable in place and connects the front and back plate.

Finally, they reached the 3.7 V LiOn Polymer battery, which is soldered to the logic board. The logic board has at least two connecting antenna cables. There’s also a dab of glue underneath the cables. We assume it’s for reliability, and we imagine that Apple has learned from the iPod by taking this extra precaution.

Update: iFixit has now removed the three Phillips #00 screws that secure the logic board to the front panel. These are located underneath the black speaker in the upper right hand corner, to the left of the battery wires on the logic board, and at the bottom left corner.

They then removed the speaker located on the top of the phone, which appears to be just a standard ear speaker.

There are also ten Phillips #00 screws around the perimeter of the iPhone, with orange plastic that we think may be rolled antennas that curl around the edge of the phone. iFixit says this isn’t just to save space- it will also improve reception by receiving a signal in more than one plane.

They’re now busy removing the metal framework, but are experiencing some technical difficulties to their site. Too much traffic, perhaps? We'll keep you posted.
