18th June 2007 - Sprint has announced the replacement for their venerable PPC-6700; the Sprint Power Vision Smart Device Mogul by HTC. The new cell phone is smaller and thinner than the PPC-6700, and runs the new Windows Mobile 6 OS. It also includes the same style of slide-out QWERTY keyboard,  a 2 megapixel camera and an EVDO radio that will be upgradeable to support the faster EVDO Rev A data connection in the near future.

The Mogul also has more memory: 256MB of RAM against the 128MB on the PPC-6700. Sprint also claims that the Mogul is thinner (0.73 inches thick, against the 1 inch thickness of the PPC-6700) and has better battery life. The screen size remains the same as the PPC-6700; a 2.8-inch QVGA LCD screen.

One interesting addition to the Mogul is support for Java. Sprint claims that this is the first of their phones to support the device independent programming language, and this potentially opens the phone to a slew of third-party software packages. Support is also included for the Sprint music store, which sells songs that can be downloaded directly to the device for 99 cents. More storage space is offered through the MicroSD card slot, and a 512MB card is included.

Sprint claims that the 1500mAh battery will provide a talk time of up to 6.1 hours. The PPC-6700 came with a 1300mAh battery and a claimed talk time of 3.1 hours). Also included is an 802.11g and Bluetooth 2.0 radio. The Mogul is priced at $399 with a 2-year contract. It’s available online now, and in Sprint stores in July.
