8th May 2007 - Sony Ericsson has just announced their latest weapon in the smart phone war; the P1. The new phone replaces the venerable P990 in their lineup and boasts a 3.2 megapixel camera and a new keyboard design that they claim combines a QWERTY keyboard with a keypad. The phone also includes support for the GSM 900, 1800 and 1900 wireless bands, but the only high speed data connection is the 2100MHz UMTS band, which isn’t used in the US.

An 802.11b WiFi radio is also included for connecting to hot spots, as well as a Bluetooth 2.0 radio and an FM radio. The P2 also comes with a 512MB Memory Stick Micro card, and is smaller and thinner than the P990 at a slimline 0.66 inches thick and 4.4 ounces in weight.

Sony Ericsson claim a talk time battery life of up to 10 hours on GSM networks and 3 hours 30 minutes on UMTS networks from the 1120 mAh battery, and a standby time of up to 440 hours on GSM and 350 hours on UMTS. The phone will be released in selected markets in the third quarter of 2007; no information on price had yet been released.
