CTIA, Orlando, 26th March 2007 – Sony Ericsson has just announced a new phone for those who like to walk, talk and listen to tunes; the W580 is a slim slider phone that plays back music and includes a pedometer. In an unusual move for the company, the new phone is being launched first in the US market, and is built for US networks.

The pedometer built into the W580 can be used to keep track of the number of steps you have taken, the number of calories burnt or the speed and distance of a run or walk. And it can play back some tunes to keep you amused while you run: the W580 will ship with a 512MB Memory Stick Micro, which Sony Ericsson claims will be enough for 470 songs. It also ships with Sony’s own Disc2Phone software, which can rip CDs and transfer the files to the phone, which can be in MP3 or in Sony’s own eAAC+ format.

Other features include a 2-inch LCD screen an optional set of MPS-70 portable or MPS-75 snap-on speakers (no price was announced on either). The phone will also work with Sony’s new $TK MBR-100 bluetooth receiver, which allows you to play back music from the phone on a conventional home audio system.

However, no carriers have yet been announced for the phone, and Sony did not announce a price for the Quad Band EDGE device. They did, however, say that the phone will be available in Q3 of 2007.
