Skype has released an application to offer their VOIP calling and messaging services on Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch. The app became available today in Apple's App Store and is free. Skype is a popular VOIP service that can be used on multiple platforms, offering low-cost calls, text messaging, and more.

The intrductory screen
To use the Skype app on the iPhone, you can log in with an existing Skype account or create a new one through a link on the introductory screen. Once you sign in, you are presented with 5 tabs to access your Skype contacts, chat conversations, a virtual dial pad, your call history, and your account information. On the virtual dial pad screen, you can also access your iPhone's contact list directly if the person you want to call is not in your Skype contact list.

The dial pad
Skype on the iPhone will not work when connected only to a 3G or EDGE cellular network and requires a Wi-Fi connection. Skype can be used on iPhone and iPod Touch models running 2.1 or higher firmware, and you can download it here (this link opens iTunes).
