Call Time (6.0)
To test call time we make a phone call to the phone using Skype and then play an audio book over the connection to simulate conversation. We then time how long it takes for the battery to run out. The Katana DLX lasted five hours in our talk time test. This is a little better than average for a phone. You can see from the table below the Katana DLX did better than every phone except for the Sprint Upstage, which was helped by the extended battery "wallet" it ships with.
| Cell Phone | Talk Time | Score |
| Sanyo Katana DLX | 5 hours | 6.00 |
| Nokia N75 | 2 hours 23 minutes | 2.86 |
| Sprint Upstage | 6 hours 37 minutes | 7.94 |
| Motorola Krzr K1m | 3 hours 27 minutes | 4.14 |
| Sanyo M1 | 4 hours 15 minutes | 5.10 |
| LG Chocolate VX8550 | 4 hours 43 minutes | 5.66 |
Music Playback (5.46)
To test battery performance while playing music we set the phone to play a looped album until the battery runs out, with all other settings left at default. The Katana DLX lasted 7 hours 25 minutes in our music playback test. This is a good, but not great time. The Sprint Upstage, Sanyo M1, and LG Chocolate all did better on this test than the Katana DLX, in some cases significantly better. Still, seven and a half hours should be sufficient for listening to music for a couple of hours during a commute while still saving enough battery for other phone functions.
| Cell Phone | Music Playback Time | Score |
| Sanyo Katana DLX | 7 hours 25 minutes | 5.46 |
| Nokia N75 | 5 hours 36 minutes | 4.03 |
| Sprint Upstage | 25 hours 34 minutes | 18.41 |
| Motorola Krzr K1m | 4 hours 22 minutes | 3.14 |
| Sanyo M1 | 8 hours 12 minutes | 5.90 |
| LG Chocolate VX8550 | 13 hours 55 minutes | 10.02 |
Web Browsing (4.68)
To test how long the battery lasts while browsing the Web we point the phone's browser at a test page set to refresh every 10 seconds. We then time how long it takes for the battery to expend itself. The Katana DLX lasted 3 hours 54 minutes in our test browsing on Sprint's EVDO network. Never, 3G data networks are inherently more battery intensive than 2G networks, so the Katana DLX's time is not untoward. We still would have liked to see it last a little longer, though. The Sanyo M1 lasted an hour longer than the Katana DLX, for example. Still, as you will note from the table below, the Katana DLX did better in this test than the Nokia N75, Krzr K1m, and Chocolate XV8550, all of which also function on 3G networks. The Sprint Upstage lasted longer than any of the other phones due to its extended battery wallet.
| Cell Phone | Browsing Time | Score |
| Sanyo Katana DLX | 3 hours 54 minutes | 4.68 |
| Nokia N75 | 2 hours 42 minutes | 3.24 |
| Sprint Upstage | 6 hours 10 minutes | 7.40 |
| Motorola Krzr K1m | 3 hours 34 minutes | 4.28 |
| Sanyo M1 | 4 hours 54 minutes | 5.88 |
| LG Chocolate VX8550 | 2 hours 32 minutes | 3.04 |
Idle Time unscored
In order to ensure we deliver reviews in a timely manner we do not test idle time. Unfortunately neither Sprint nor Sanyo provide any information about the Katana DLX's standby time.
