March 27, 2007 – Data storage company SanDisk today announced a higher capacity Memory Stick Micro card that will work with Sony Ericsson mobile phones. Pricing hasn’t yet been determined, but the new 4GB card will be shipped to OEMs in May and to retailers later this year.
The new card, called the SanDisk M2, addresses the increasing trend for Mobile phones to becoming multimedia devices with the ability to store audio, video, and pictures. SanDisk is hoping to capitalize on this trend.
“This new card, and other SanDisk cards for mobile phones such as our 4GB microSD High Capacity, are reshaping the wireless landscape,” said Norm Frentz, director of marketing for SanDisk’s mobile consumer solutions division, in today’s press release. “This is the threshold at which mobile phones provide enough capacity to become the user’s all-in-one portable music player, camcorder, photo album and video player.”
The 4GB M2 card will be able to store up to 1,000 4-minute songs, 2,000 2-megapixel photos, or 20 hours of MPEG4 video at a time. The card is compatible with Sony Ericsson’s slim Cyber-shot and Walkman series multimedia mobile handsets, such as the Walkman W580 that was launched yesterday, and can be used in Sony’s game players and digital cameras that have a Memory Stick slot with a $15 adapter.
