Samsung Serenata First Impression Cell Phone Review - Conclusion

Who's It For

Business User

There is virtually nothing on this phone for a business user. The email client can't handle their needs, typing takes a calendar year, and the organizer is thread-bare.

Budget Callers
Haha. No.

Chatty Teenager
Chatty teens will feel like huge dorks texting on this phone. The speakers probably won't be enough to make up for the plain interface and lack of camera. On the other hand if you can convince Mom and/or Dad to spend $1600 on a cell phone we'd like to commend you on your debating skills.

Media Maven
Media mavens will feel a bit attracted to this phone, regardless of the price. As it stands, it's probably the best handset for an audiophile, but they'd pay dearly for the priviledge. In addition, they'd be getting a bad phone.

Conclusion
The Serenata is single-minded in its purpose, but confused in its execution. The inputs the user is given seem really random and unintuitive. Scroll wheel dialing and texting is really cumbersome, but then again neither of those are the main focus of the device. Music playback is the focus, however, and even that isn't handled in the best of ways. We would've liked a few more on-screen reminders of the media controls, even if they automatically hid after a time. Also, we felt play/pause should have been assigned to a key as opposed to being cloistered in a menu. Again, it's really up to you to decide whether or not the nice speakers is worth $1600. On the other hand we expect the Serenata is something of a "proof-of-concept" device. We wouldn't be surprised to see the speaker technology show up on more reasonably priced handsets in a  year or so.
