Call Time (6.40)
The Samsung SLM lasted for 5 hours 20 minutes in our call time battery test, a pretty good time. Most phones fall between four and five hours, so the SLM was above average. You can see below that it put up the best time amongst our comparison phones. The Samsung SLM's good performance on this test means that the vast majority of people won't have to charge their phone more than every couple of days with regular usage. To test call time we make a call to the phone using Skype and pipe an audio book over the connection to simulate conversation. We then time how long it takes for the phone's battery to run out.

Cell Phone Talk Time Score
Samsung SLM 5 hours 20 mins 6.40
Razr2 V8 3 hours 15 mins 3.90
LG Venus 3 hours 19 mins 3.98
T-Mobile Shadow 4 hours 5 mins 4.90
Sony Ericsson W580i 4 hours 25 mins 5.30
Helio Fin 3 hours 42 mins 4.42

Music Playback (10.85)
To test music playback we set an album to play repeatedly and see how long the handset lasts. The Samsung SLM performed remarkably well in this test, lasting 15 hours 4 minutes. This is an excellent music playback time, as you can see below. We like to see this as the SLM is a music oriented handset and you want to be able to use such a device as your principal music player without worrying that it will kill your battery so you can't make calls. With the SLM's performance in this test you shouldn't have any problems using it as both a music device and a phone.

Cell Phone Music Playback Time Score
Samsung SLM 15 hours 4 mins 10.85
Razr2 V8 4 hours 37 mins 3.32
LG Venus 8 hours 52 mins 6.38
T-Mobile Shadow 4 hours 28 mins 3.22
Sony Ericsson W580i 5 hours 35 mins 4.02
Helio Fin 8 hours 46 mins 5.64

Web Browsing (3.54)
The Samsung SLM's web browsing performance was not very impressive at 2 hours 57 minutes. Although we've seen worse, just take a look at the Razr2 V8's performance below, it's still on the low side, all of our other comparison phones did better than the SLM. The principal culprit here is likely AT&T's high speed 3G network, which is much more battery hungry than older generation data networks. The point is that if you're going to be doing a lot of browsing or downloading of music on the Samsung SLM, which I'm sure AT&T hopes you do, you better keep a charger or extra battery handy. To test web browsing performance we point the phone's browser at a web page that is set to refresh every ten seconds. We then make sure the phone's screen stays on and time how long it lasts.

Cell Phone Browsing Time Score
Samsung SLM 2 hours 57 mins 3.54
Razr2 V8 1 hours 31 mins 1.82
LG Venus 3 hours 23 mins 4.06
T-Mobile Shadow 3 hours 19 mins 3.98
Sony Ericsson W580i 4 hours 11 mins 5.02
Helio Fin 3 hours 10 mins 3.80

Idle Time unscored
To ensure we deliver our reviews to you in a timely fashion we don't do idle time tests. According to AT&T the Samsung SLM's idle time is ten days.
