Samsung Memoir Cell Phone Review - Connectivity

T-Mobile is where it's at for the Memoir if you want 3G speeds, and it has no love whatsoever for AT&T's 3G network so you're out of luck if you want to switch carriers and still get fast data speeds. The Memoir lets us down in a big way with with no Wi-Fi radio, but at least Bluetooth is on board and superbly easy to use.

Cellular Bands (8.0)
The Memoir is a GSM phone that operates on the 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz bands. T-Mobile primarily operates on the 1900MHz band, but the Memoir is well-equipped for connecting on other frequencies if you're in an area where T-Mobile has a roaming agreement with another carrier where towers operate on a different frequency.

Data Support Score (8.0)
The Memoir has 3G connectivity on the 1700 and 2100 MHz bands, allowing it connect to T-Mobile's 3G network in the U.S. and the 3G networks of carriers in Europe and other locations around the world. In order to operate on AT&T's network in the U.S., the Memoir would need to be able to transmit and receive data on the 850MHz and 1900MHz bands, so 3G on AT&T's network is a no-go.

Bluetooth (8.5)
The Memoir has a Bluetooth radio operating under the 2.0 + EDR standard and includes 6 profiles to make it possible to use a Bluetooth headset or handsfree device, including stereo headphones, and transfer files, among others, though the ability to tether your computer to the Memoir to your computer via Bluetooth to use its data connection is not present.

When we went to pair the Memoir with computers in our office, we were presented with a neat radar-like view of the available Bluetooth devices in the vicinity in the Memoir's Bluetooth menu. Pairing from there was exceptionally easy and tapping on a paired device in the radar view even allows you to see all of the available services possible with that paired device.

Wi-Fi (0.0)
When we first saw the Memoir at Mobile World Congress in February, we were hoping that the omission of Wi-Fi in the specs was an oversight, but alas, it is not. The Memoir does not have a Wi-Fi radio, which still irks us and should irk you too when you try to upload those 8-megapixel images you captured with it to your Flickr account.

Infrared (0.0)
It's a rare cell phone these days that has an infrared sensor, and the Memoir doesn't disappoint us here at all without one.
