Samsung Memoir (SGH-t929) Cell Phone First Impressions Review - Software

OS
The Memoir features Samsung's TouchWiz interface, running atop a proprietary OS. During our brief time with the demo unit, it was snappy and responsive, if not entirely intuitive.

Home Screen
The Memoir's home screen features 4 icons across the bottom to offer shortcuts to the phone application, contacts list, web browser, and main menu. At the top are the signal strength, network connection type, battery level, and time information you expect to find. Below the signal strength indicator is a tab which, when pulled out on to the screen with a dragging motion, shows widgets that can be dragged onto the home screen to act as shortcuts. These widgets can be placed anywhere on the screen and can even provide some functionality without fully opening the application. For example, opening the photo album widget will show miniature thumbnails of saved photos that can be scrolled through right on the home screen.

Extensibility
As a proprietary OS, TouchWiz does not offer the extensibility that other operating systems, like Google's Android, Windows Mobile, and even the iPhone OS, offer.

Browser
The press release for the Memoir states that it has "full HTML web browsing capabilities." We were unable to see the Memoir's browser in action since the data connection in the demo unit was not active.

Other Software
The Memoir comes with Telenav navigation software. We were unable to see it work without a data connection or GPS signal, unfortunately.
