Samsung Memoir (SGH-t929) Cell Phone First Impressions Review - Imaging

Resolution
The Memoir's 8-megapixel camera will yield 3456 x 2304 images, beating T-Mobile's other camera feature phone, the Motorola ZINE, with its 5-megapixel camera. Sony has announced a 12.2-megapixel camera, but that won't be available until later in the year. This makes the Memoir the highest resolution cameraphone that's widely available in the US.

Interface
The Memoir's camera interface is a little busy, with menu options showing up on 3 edges of the screen to do things like switch to video capture mode, adjust the scene mode, change the flash settings and more. However, these settings disappear after a few seconds, leaving the live preview to take up the entire screen. Tapping on the screen brings up the menu options again.

One feature emphasized during the event was the ability to upload captured images easily to online photo gallery services, such as flickr, Snapfish, Kodak Gallery, and others. However, the Memoir does not have Wi-Fi, so these uploads could take some time, even over T-Mobile's 3G network.

Zoom
The Memoir features up to 16x digital zoom, which means that the center of the image is enlarged to produce the zoom effect. Although we were not able to test this feature, we typically find that digital zooms have a serious effect on image quality, making images much worse. While it's rare to find optical zoom on a cell phone, we're still a little disappointed that a device touted as a camera phone that could replace your dedicated digital camera doesn't offer optical zoom.

Focus
The Memoir has an auto-focus lens, and we would expect no less from an 8-megapixel camera phone.

Flash
The Memoir has a Xenon flash, like most compact cameras and the Motorola ZINE, that should provide a slightly larger range than the average LED flash most often found on cell phones.

Video
The Memoir is capable of capturing video, with a maximum recording time of 60 minutes, though this maximum may vary depending on the selected recording format. The video format or resolution was not available at the time this review was written.
