Samsung today announced three new devices for Korea that will run on the next generation WiBro network that is being built up around Seoul. WiBro allows for maximum data throughput of between 30 to 50 Mbps. The WiBro network being rolled out in Korea currently provides around 13Mbps of data throughput. The three devices Samsung announced today are the SPH-M8100, a smart phone with a 2.8” screen, TV out and two megapixel camera; the Samsung SPH-P9000, which Samsung is calling a “multimedia convergence device”, which includes a full QWERTY keyboard, Mp3 player and camera; and the Samsung SPH-H1200 USB Dongle, which allows you to access the WiBro network with your laptop. The SPH-H1200 also allows you to access HSDPA high-speed networks, a standard that is used by GSM networks around the world. This is a major plus for business travelers who want to access high speed wireless networks while traveling, although HSDPA will be a significant step down in terms for speed when compared to WiBro.
Seeing devices like these makes one wonder once again why the cool stuff seems to be released overseas before we see it here in the U.S. No word on when or if similar devices will be available in North America. See the official press release here.
