Samsung today announced an 8GB Micro SD card. Micro SD is widely used in mobile devices. Micro SD is about one quarter the size of full sized SD cards, which are used in digital cameras and other consumer electronics. Micro SD and the slightly larger Mini SD were developed for smaller devices such as music capable mobile phones. Samsung expects that by 2010 8GB Micro SD cards "...will be the market mainstream in terms of units sold."While expandable storage such as Micro SD has become the standard for many mobile phones, some new phones are beginning to build large amounts of storage into the device. The Sony Ericsson W950 (4GB), Nokia N91 (4GB or 8GB) and the highly anticipated iPhone (4GB or 8GB) are all examples of such phones. The new 8GB Micro SD cards announced by Samsung will be capable of 16 Megabyte/second read speeds and 6 Megabytes/second write speed.
It may be some time before such cards are readily available as 4GB cards are still not widely available.
