15th Feb 08 - Samsung has announced the forthcoming release of the Memoir, a touch screen cell phone with an 8-megapixel camera. The new phone has what Samsung describes as premium imaging functionality, with 12 scene modes, including modes for portraits, landscapes fireworks and a backlit mode. There are also 5 shooting modes for shooting singe shots, continuous shots and panoramas. A smsile shot mode  (which uses smile detection to try and take a smiling shot) is also included, as well as a picture message and slow motion mode.

There is no optical zoom, but there is a 16x digital zoom feature. Samsung did not release details of the size of the sensor, but they did say that it is a CMOS sensor (as a pose to the CCD sensors used on some higher-end cameras), and that the lens is an autofocus lens, not the fixed focus type. It also includes a Xenon flash, which is the same type used by most dedicated cameras. Some other cell phones use an LED light instead of a flash, which is less bright and makes your subjects squint.

The phone is about 0.55 inches thick, and 4.17 inches high. The majority of the bakc of the camera is taken up by the 240 by 400 pixel touch screen, whichc an show up to 262,000 colors. The Memoir also includes GPS, an on-screen QWERTY keyboard and haptic feedback and runs on T-Mobile's 1800Mhz 3G network. Support is also offered for the 4 GSM bands: 850, 900, 1800 and 1900MHz, so it should be able to roam onto most international GSM networks.

It will be available through T-Mobile on Feb 25th, but no price has yet been revealed. Stay tuned for our hands-on first impression review of this impressive looking new cell phone.
