Call Time (4.86)
For this test, we call the phone using Skype and play an audio book over the line to approximate a conversation. We play clips from the computer and from the Head and Torso Simulator the phone is strapped to so it better simulates a two-way conversation. The Blast lasted 4 hours and 3 minutes. This isn't great, but it is longer than some lower-end phones; the Razr V3m, for instance, ran out of juice after just 2 hours and 41 minutes. If you tend to have long conversations, you should probably give the battery life meter a quick glance before going off on a diatribe.
| Cell Phone | Talk Time | Score |
| Samsung Blast | 4 hours, 3 minutes | 4.86 |
| Apple iPhone | 7 hours, 4 minutes | 8.48 |
| Sanyo Katana DLX | 5 hours | 6.00 |
| Nokia N73 | 7 hours, 48 minutes | 9.36 |
| Sprint Upstage | 6 hours, 37 minutes | 7.94 |
| Motorola Razr | 2 hours, 41 minutes | 3.22 |
Music Playback (6.92)
The Blast offers better music playback battery life, lasting 9 hours and 37 minutes. This is enough time to tide you over on a plane ride to Europe, providing you don't start until you get on the plane. Most phones tend to have longer music playback than talk time, and the Blast proves to be no exception. Of course, given the weak music organizational features and the bizarre choice to only include a mono headset, you'll probably want to take your iPod along instead of using the Blast.
| Cell Phone | Music Playback Time | Score |
| Samsung Blast | 9 hours, 37 minutes | 6.92 |
| Apple iPhone | 10 hours, 46 minutes | 7.75 |
| Sanyo Katana DLX | 7 hours, 35 minutes | 5.46 |
| Nokia N73 | 9 hours, 51 minutes | 7.09 |
| Sprint Upstage | 25 hours, 34 minutes | 18.41 |
| Motorola Razr | 9 hours, 37 minutes | 6.92 |
Web Browsing (5.26)
Web browsing is a serious task for a cell phone. As such, most phones last for shorter times on this particular test in relation than the other two scores. For this test we aim the phone at a website that automatically refreshes every 10 seconds. The Blast managed to weather this constantly-refreshing Internet storm for 4 hours and 23 minutes before giving up the ghost. This isn't very long, but isn't so bad as to distance itself from the middle of the pack. Given how slow the EDGE connection can be, though, the Blast won't offer much browser bang for your battery buck.
| Cell Phone | Browsing Time | Score |
| Samsung Blast | 4 hours, 23 minutes | 5.26 |
| Apple iPhone | 5 hours, 13 minutes | 6.26 |
| Sanyo Katana DLX | 3 hours, 54 minutes | 4.68 |
| Nokia N73 | 4 hours, 6 minutes | 4.92 |
| Sprint Upstage | 6 hours, 10 minutes | 7.40 |
| Motorola Razr | 3 hours, 35 minutes | 4.30 |
Idle Time unscored
We don't score idle time as it would take more than a week in most cases to perform the test. Samsung claims the Blast can idle for eight days without needing a charge, however.
