Oct 12, 2007 - Palm has recently announced they will be starting a recycling campaign for cell phones. Ephi Banaynal, the creator of Palm's Environmental Stewardship program, has created this program to ensure phones are properly disposed of in an effort to protect the environment.
All cell phones have toxic components, such as mercury or lead, and their batteries contain Lithium, which can ignite, resulting in an incredibly hot flame or even an explosion. This program aims to stop such materials from entering landfills, and will instead ensure any hazardous wastes are disposed of properly. What the program will do is accept all phones and accessories, sort and test them, then either reuse them or reclaim usable parts. The remainder will be disposed of appropriately, away from landfills that could contaminate groundwater.
The program is free to use -- including postage, as a prepaid mailing label is available for download. Any revenue generated will go towards funding the program or to the Palm Foundation, a charity that funds educational programs. In addition, Palm will accept any phones and accessories, not just those that they've produced.
