Palm today announced the latest iteration of its popular Treo line of smart phones. The Treo 755p is an update to the Treo 700p, a version of the Treo that runs Palm OS, as opposed to versions that run Windows Mobile. The 755p adopts a slightly revamped form factor that was introduced with the Treo 750 and 680 models late last year. The major differences from the Treo 700p is the removal of the external antenna, a shift form SD to Mini SD cards for storage and a slightly slimmed down profile. The 755p will be available on Sprint's CDMA network initially.Palm has not made any major upgrades to its Palm OS in the new device. Palm OS has been losing market share amongst smart phones as the operating system has not seen a significant upgrade in years. Palm OS was purchased by Japanese software vendor Access in 2005, which is developing a Linux based version of the operating system. Palm recently announced that they have signed a deal to license the operating system from Access for development, but the future of the platform is still in doubt. Palm began producing Treo's based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile platform early last year in an attempt to diversify their device portfolio and better meet the needs of the enterprise market.
The Treo 755p sports the traditional Treo form factor, with a full QWERTY keyboard and a large square screen. As a smart phone it provides a wide array of functionality, including the ability to install native third party applications. Initially released on Sprint's network, it supports EVDO for fast data transfer and is the first Treo to ship with Google Maps built in. The Treo 755p will be available in mid May from Palm or Sprint for $279.99 after discounts and promotions.
