6th Dec 07 - The Opera mini web browser has been ported to Qualcomm's BREW platform. The new version of the Opera Mini mobile web browser was announced this morning by the Norwegian company, who say that the new version is faster than the web browsers that come built into many phones. They also say that is is cheaper to use; it uses a remote proxy server to compress web pages before they are sent to the device, so users are receiving less data, which means less cost on per-kilobyte data plans. Opera Mini also includes a number of other features to make browsing the web on a cell phone easier, such as the Opera Zoom feature, which allows the user to zoom in on parts of a web site. It also has a desktop view mode, which tries to render the web page as closely as possible to the same layout you would get on a PC. However, the new BREW version of Opera Mini is not available for download to BREW phones; the company is working to make it available through carriers and to persuade the networks to install it on their phones. At present, the only carrier to have signed up is the Indian network Tata, who will be installing the new browser on their handsets.
