6th August 2007 – Nokia has announced that they will be supporting Microsoft's PlayReady digital rights management (DRM) system in future handsets that use their Series 60 and 40 platforms. This support should mean that Nokia handsets will be able to play copy protected music and video purchased from online stores that use the forthcoming content protection system.

Microsoft's new PlayReady system is designed to allow providers of mobile media to securely sell their wares and control who can access them. The new system is designed to work with music, video and games and other software; the current PlaysForSure system only works with music. DRM systems such as PlayReady control whether a user is authorized to play content to prevent unauthorized use and copying. The highlihghts of PlayREady are outlined in an interview with Microsoft's Jim Alkove here.

The new DRM system is due to be rolled out in 2008, and Nokia plans to “support PlayReady across a range of S60 and Series 40 devices starting in 2008”, said Ilkka Raiskinen, senior vice president of Multimedia Experiences at Nokia. Nokia's support gives Microsoft a significant leg up in the market; with new Nokia handsets supporting the new system, it becomes a more attractive system to use for the carriers and provides of digital content. Unsurprisingly, Microsoft has already outlined plans to support PlayReady in Windows Mobile handsets, so between Nokia and Microsoft, a large percentage of the phones out there will come with support for the new system built in, starting in 2008.
