Resolution
The N97 has a 5-megapixel camera that will yield images with a resolution of 2584 x 1938 pixels. Compared to the iPhone 3G's 2-megapixel camera, the N97 wins the camera show-down on paper. However, several phones announced recently beat it on resolution: the Samsung Memento has an 8-megapixel camera and Sony had announced plans for a 12.1-megapixel cell phone.

Interface
The N97's camera and video capture interface takes a departure from the interface we typically see on N-series devices. In our short time with it, we couldn't go through it thoroughly to see if this was a good thing or a bad thing. Regardless, the live preview takes up the entire screen, which we like and it's easy to switch back and forth between the still image and video capture modes.

Zoom
The N97's specs don't indicate that has zoom, but we can't imagine that an N-series device with a 5-megapixel camera doesn't offer any zoom capability and we expect to at least some level of digital zoom in the final version.

Focus
The N97 has an auto-focus lens. With a 5-megapixel camera, auto-focus is fully expected and we're glad the N97 complies.

Flash
The N97 has a dual-LED flash that also serves as a video light during video capture. LED flashes aren't ideal (they are on constantly and can be rather irritating for those you are photographing), but they are better than nothing.

Video
The N97 is capable of recording video with a resolution of up to 640 x 480 at 30 frames per second with its main camera. No details are available yet on the video recording capabilities of the front-facing camera.
