Nokia N82 Cell Phone Review - Connectivity

Cellular Bands (8.0)
The Nokia N82 is a quad-band (850/900/1800/1900) GSM phone, which means it will work on any GSM network worldwide. This is an important feature for world travelers, although in the U.S. you should note that it won't work with CDMA networks run by Verizon and Sprint. Our score for cellular bands is based on the total number of bands supported.

Data Support Score (6.0)
The Nokia N82 supports EDGE and GPRS on all four of its GSM bands. EDGE is the faster connection with maximum speeds of around 230 Kbps. Faster 3G connectivity is only available on the 2100 Mhz band, which is used internationally but not in the United States. This means the Nokia N82 won't work on AT&T's 3G network or T-Mobile's upcoming network. This is a disappointment as there are a lot of handsets that support multiple 3G bands for UMTS/HSDPA connectivity up to 7.2 Mbps. Nokia has eschewed this trend, however, and their handsets are usually international 3G only, with a few handsets like the Nokia N95 with US 3G supporting AT&T's network but not international networks.

Bluetooth (11.0)
The Nokia N82 supports Bluetooth 2.0 with support for Enhanced Data Rate for faster connectivity. This means that you can have multiple Bluetooth devices connected at once and have more bandwith to play with. The Nokia N82 supports a good selection selection of Bluetooth Profiles including audio/video remote control, advanced audio distribution, basic image, basic printing, general audio/ visual distribution, generic object exchange, hands-free, headset, object push, file transfer, dial-up networking, and SIM access. We found it very easy to set up a partnership with a Bluetooth headset.

Wi-Fi (7.0)
We are pleased to see that the Nokia N82 supports Wi-Fi 802.11b/g for fast data connections when you have access to a Wi-Fi network. The N82 also supports the UPNP (Universal Plug and Play) standard that allows you to easily stream media to or from other UPNP devices.

Infrared (0.0)
Like many modern handsets the Nokia N82 lacks support for Infrared connectivity. This is an aging standard but can still be important to people who have an older laptop that doesn't offer Bluetooth support.
