Call Time (6.80)
To test call time we use Skype to make a phone call to the Nokia N82 and then pipe an audio book over the connection to simulate conversation. The Nokia N82 lasted five hours and forty minutes under these conditions, which is a pretty good score. You can see below that only the iPhone put up a better score on this test than the N82. This is no doubt due to the N82 using the battery efficient GSM network rather than a 3G network. Those using the N82 overseas where it's 3G capabilities comes into play should expect significantly worse talk time. Those in the U.S., however, will find it more than sufficient.
| Cell Phone | Talk Time | Score |
| Nokia N82 | 5 hours 40 mins | 6.80 |
| Nokia N81 8GB | 5 hours 25 mins | 6.50 |
| BlackBerry Pearl 8130 | 4 hours 41 mins | 5.62 |
| Palm Centro | 4 hours 8 mins | 4.96 |
| Razr2 V8 | 3 hours 15 mins | 3.90 |
| Apple iPhone | 7 hours 4 mins | 8.48 |
Music Playback (7.18)
To see how long the Nokia N82 lasted when playing back music we set an album to play at maximum volume using the loud speakers and set to loop continuously. The N82 lasted an impressive nine hours and fifty-eight minutes in this test. As with our talk time test the Nokia N82 put up the best score amongst our comparison phones with the exception of the Apple iPhone. In particular we were happy to see it perform much better than the Nokia N81, which lasted an anemic four hours nineteen minutes. The Nokia N82's music playback time should be sufficient even for those how like to listen to music for several hours a day. It should be capable of replacing a dedicated music player like an iPod.
| Cell Phone | Music Playback Time | Score |
| Nokia N82 | 9 hours 58 mins | 7.18 |
| Nokia N81 8GB | 4 hours 19 mins | 3.11 |
| BlackBerry Pearl 8130 | 7 hours 10 mins | 5.16 |
| Palm Centro | 6 hours 47 mins | 4.88 |
| Razr2 V8 | 4 hours 37 mins | 3.32 |
| Apple iPhone | 10 hours 46 mins | 7.75 |
Web Browsing (6.08)
To see how long you can browse the internet on the Nokia N82 we point the browser at a web page that is set to refresh every ten seconds. Normally we just set this up and let it go to see how long it will last. With the N82, however, we found that the pages that we refresh were quickly cached to se had to baby-sit this test by clearing the cache on a regular basis so that it would actually transfer data. Under these conditions the N82 lasted five hours four minutes of web browsing. This is a pretty solid time, but unlike our other two tests the N82 fell short of both the iPhone and Nokia N81 in this test. That being said we're perfectly satisfied with how long the Nokia N82 lasted in our test. We should also mention that the same caveats about 3G networks that we mentioned in our talk test apply here as well. The N82 was using the fairly battery efficient Edge network in our test. If you are overseas using the much more battery hungry 3G network on the 2100 Mhz band you will find your browsing time is much less.
| Cell Phone | Browsing Time | Score |
| Nokia N82 | 5 hours 4 mins | 6.08 |
| Nokia N81 8GB | 5 hours 38 mins | 6.76 |
| BlackBerry Pearl 8130 | 4 hours 40 mins | 5.60 |
| Palm Centro | 4 hours 22 mins | 5.24 |
| Razr2 V8 | 1 hours 31 mins | 1.82 |
| Apple iPhone | 5 hours 13 mins | 6.26 |
Idle Time unscored
In order to ensure that we can deliver reviews in a timely fashion we don't test idle time. Nokia's stated standby time for the N82 is 225 hours.
