Nokia E66 Cell Phone Review - Connectivity

The Nokia E66 is an extremely well connected device with support for global GSM networks, AT&T's 3G network in the U.S., a plethora of Bluetooth profiles, Wi-Fi and Infrared. About the only thing we could have asked for was support for international 3G networks as well.

Cellular Bands (8.0)
The Nokia E66 is a quad-band GSM device that will function on any GSM network worldwide. This makes it a good choice for business users who go overseas a lot. Although the E66 does support 3G on AT&T's frequencies of 850/1900 Mhz it does not support the internationally used 2100 Mhz band. This means that you won't be able to use the E66 in countries like Japan, which only use that frequency.

Data Support Score (7.0)
As we mentioned above the Nokia E66 support 3G on AT&T's frequencies. This means you will be able to get high speed data, up to a current maximum of 1.4 mbps, on AT&T's 3G network. As international 3G and T-Mobile's upcoming 3G network are not supported, however, you'll be relegated to the slower EDGE speeds, which max out at around 230 kbps. If you're outside of AT&T's 3G network you will also fall back on the EDGE network.

Bluetooth (10.0)
The Nokia E66 support Bluetooth 2.0 with Enhanced Data Rate for faster data transfer on the short range wireless technology. The E66 supports a good selection of Bluetooth profiles including Dial up Networking, Object Push, File Transfer, Headset Profile, Basic Imaging Profile, Generic Object Exchange, Remote Sim Access Profile, Generic Audio/Video Distribution, Audio Video Remote Control and Advanced Audio Distribution. We had no trouble getting the E66 set up with a Bluetooth headset.

Wi-Fi (5.0)
The Nokia E66 support Wi-Fi in both b and g varieties. This gives users an option for high speed data when a 3G network is not available. Nokia conveniently includes a home screen plugin that allows you to quickly find and set up Wi-Fi access points. Unlike the more consumer oriented N-Series devices the Nokia E66 does not support Universal Plug and Play (UPNP) for streaming multimedia over Wi-Fi to other UPNP enabled devices.

Infrared (7.0)
As befits it's stats as a business oriented device the Nokia E66 supports Infrared, which is an older short range line of sight wireless technology that has been almost completely replaced by Bluetooth. In business environments, however, it's often important to support legacy technologies like this.
