Yesterday Nokia announced an update to the Series 40 software that runs most of its consumer handsets. The fifth edition of Series 40 will add support for advanced Java platforms. Series 40 runs on Nokia's basic consumer oriented handsets and does not included the more advanced smart phone features of its Series 60 devices.

The new version of Series 40 will provide support for the latest version of Java MIDP 2.1, and will also add support for Flash Lite, a platform that allows developers to use flash technologies to develop software for cell phones. Development for mobile platforms is expected to be a rapidly growing business as individuals use their mobile phones to access a variety of web based services. Documentation for new developer tools will be available in June of this year.
