Nokia Announces First Touchscreen Music Phone

Nokia announced its first touchscreen music phone today, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. The quad-band GSM, 3G-enabled phone will sport a 3.2-inch display with tactile feedback, a 3.2-megapixel camera, aGPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth (including the A2DP profile), among others - all features that aim it squarely at Apple's iPhone 3G.

Nokia's only experience with touchscreen interfaces to date has been for its internet tablet product line. In their first-ever touchscreen cell phone interface, the 5800 will feature media and contacts bars to allow easy access to these features. The touchscreen will respond to both finger and stylus input and also includes hand-writing recognition, in addition to on-screen keyboards, for text entry.

The 5800 will feature Nokia's new Comes with Music service that will make its debut in the first quarter of 2009 in selected regions. This service will offer music protected with Windows Media DRM from Sony BMG, Universal Music Group, EMI, and Warner Music Group and will allow over-the-air downloads directly to the phone. The 5800 will come with an 8GB microSD card in the box, along with a stereo headset, carrying case, and more.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will be available in select regions this quarter, and in early 2009 in the U.S. Pricing for the device in the U.S. is not yet available.
