Nokia 6555 Cell Phone Review - Tour & Design

Summary
The Nokia 6555 is a small handset, but it's not a slim phone in the style of Razrs. We have some concerns about its long-term durability and don't find it particularly attractive, but it does feel comfortable in your hand.

Front Closed

When closed, the front of the Nokia 6555 has a small display sitting on a black background. Above the screen is the Nokia logo and above it is the 1.3-megapixel camera. Below the camera is the AT&T logo. Surrounding the black part of the front is a silver "racing stripe" with red surrounding that. The top of the Nokia 6555's flip doesn't reach all the way to the bottom when closed, so you also see a small black strip at the bottom of the front when the phone is closed.

Front Open

Opening the Nokia 6555 reveals the 2-inch QVGA (320 x 240-pixel) display on the top flip. On the bottom flip are the control keys and keypad.

Left

On the left side of the phone are two buttons and a port. Near the top, sitting on the upper half of the phone, is a volume rocker key and a dedicated push to talk button just above it. On the lower half of the phone near the bottom is a MicroUSB port for data transfers.

Top

The top of the Nokia 6555 holds the hinge mechanism.

Bottom

Nothing to see here.

Right

The right side of the 6555 has two ports, both on the lower half of the phone. Near the top is the 2.5mm headset jack and near the bottom is Nokia's proprietary "slim" charging port. These look very much alike, so be sure you plug the right thing into the right port.

Back

The back side of the phone doesn't hold any major features.

Battery Out

The back of the Nokia 6555 comes off all in one piece by pushing it "up" toward the top of the phone. Once removed you'll reveal the 1020 mAh battery. If you remove the battery you'll find the SIM card and MicroSD card slots.

In the Box (2.0)
The Nokia 6555 doesn't ship with many accessories. All you get besides the phone, battery, and manuals are a wall charger and a 3.5mm headphone adaptor for the 2.5mm headphone jack. This is disappointing, especially since the Nokia 6555 is touted as a multimedia device. We would have liked to see a USB cable and stereo headphones included as well. And while we're at it, a memory card to get you started would be nice, too.

Handling (6.0)
The Nokia 6555 isn't a thin flip phone, but it is fairly slim, which along with curved lines make it sit comfortably in your hand. The all plastic construction produces a very light phone, so you shouldn't have trouble holding it up to your head for long calls. Although some of the plastic on the phone is slippery, the black portions on the front and back are easier to grip, so you shouldn't find yourself dropping it too much. Opening the phone is easy -  since the top half of the phone juts out ever so slightly on either side, you can easily flip it open with one hand. Some may find it annoying that you can't flip it from the bottom, but we found that the long and slim form factor meant we didn't even want to do this. We found handling the Nokia 6555 isn't going to make you swoon, but it is comfortable to hold and use.

Portability (7.0)
The Nokia 6555 measures 3.92 x 1.74 x 0.77 inches and weighs 3.4 ounces. The handset is thicker than a Razr, but isn't as wide and is just as tall. It should fit comfortably into most pants pockets, but it will show if you're wearing skintight jeans. It will also fit comfortably into a bag. It's light weight means it won't weigh you down.

Aesthetics (3.0)
Some may like the Nokia 6555's black and red styling, but we did not. It looks like exactly what it is, a fairly cheap, plasticky handset. If you're looking for a stylish phone, the Nokia 6555 probably isn't for you.

Durability (3.0)
Since it's a flip phone, we automatically have concerns about the Nokia 6555's durability because of the moving parts. We found that in our review model the hinge jiggled a bit, which makes us worry even more. We also detected some creaks in the handset when it was twisted, and the all-plastic construction doesn't feel particularly durable. All of this makes us worry that the Nokia 6555 might not be the most durable handset out there.
