Nokia 6555 Cell Phone Review - Battery Life

Summary
The Nokia 6555 lasted for a pretty solid nine hours when playing back music, but talk time was unimpressive at just over three hours. If you're browsing the Web you'll get a little more time at about four and a half hours. While we were satisfied with the music playback and, to a lesser extent, the browsing times, the talk time can only be termed as poor. For information on how we conduct our battery tests see this article.

Call Time (3.70)
We were disappointed by the Nokia 6555's sub-par call time of 3 hours and 5 minutes. You can see below that only the N75, another 3G Nokia handset, performed worse on the test than the 6555, although several handsets did almost as poorly. As a 3G handset there's some excuse for this score, as AT&T's high-speed data and call network uses significantly more power than the older GSM network, but even so three hours of call time is pretty poor. Nokia quotes talk time for GSM mode only, and even then the Nokia 6555 falls short of their stated 3 hour and 30 minute time. The bottom line is that anyone who spends a lot of time chatting is going to find the battery meter on the Nokia 6555 falling quickly.

Cell Phone Talk Time Score
Nokia 6555 3 hours 5 mins 3.70
Samsung SLM 5 hours 20 mins 6.40
LG Venus 3 hours 19 mins 3.98
Sony Ericsson W580i 4 hours 25 mins 5.30
Razr2 V8 3 hours 15 mins 3.90
Nokia N75 2 hours 23 mins 2.86

Music Playback (6.56)
The Nokia 6555 did much better on our music playback test than it did on our talk time test, lasting 9 hours and 7 minutes. Although not the best we've ever seen (see the Samsung SLM's impressive performance below), it is above average and means you should be able to listen to music on the Nokia 6555 for several hours a day without killing your battery.

Cell Phone Music Playback Time Score
Nokia 6555 9 hours 7 mins 6.56
Samsung SLM 15 hours 4 mins 10.85
LG Venus 8 hours 52 mins 6.38
Sony Ericsson W580i 5 hours 35 mins 4.02
Razr2 V8 4 hours 37 mins 3.32
Nokia N75 5 hours 36 mins 4.03s

Web Browsing (5.34)
We were a little surprised to see the Nokia 6555's battery last almost an hour and a half longer in our Web browsing test than in our talk time test, but there it is at 4 hours and 27 minutes. This is probably due to the somewhat unintuitive fact that talking on 3G networks often takes more battery life than transferring data. The difference will be a bonus to those who like to browse the Web on their phones, although we can't say we'd like to spend four and a half hours using the Nokia 6555's Web browser. On the plus side you can see it could be so much worse - we pity Razr2 V8 owners who like to browse, and that's not even on 3G.

Cell Phone Browsing Time Score
Nokia 6555 4 hours 27 mins 5.34
Samsung SLM 2 hours 57 mins 3.54
LG Venus 3 hours 23 mins 4.06
Sony Ericsson W580i 4 hours 11 mins 5.02
Razr2 V8 1 hours 31 mins 1.82
Nokia N75 2 hours 42 mins 3.24

Idle Time unscored
In order to ensure we deliver reviews in a timely fashion we don't test idle time. Nokia's stated idle time for the 6555 is 10 days.
