Nokia 5310 Cell Phone Review - Battery Life

The Nokia 5310 surpassed its claimed talk time by far, and did very well in the music playback test. Web browsing in real-life scenarios may result in shorter battery life than our tests reveal, but it should still prove to be a long-lasting phone in many situations for most users. For more information about our battery tests see this article.

Call Time (6.28)
In our call time test, the Nokia 5310 lasted well beyond the claimed talk time of up to 3 hours, going to 5 hours and 14 minutes. This is one of the best talk times among our comparison phones, and it was only beat by the iPhone 3G with a call time of 5 hours and 50 minutes. All but the exceptionally talkative should not have a problem with the Nokia 5310 on a busy day with no AC outlet in sight.

Music Playback (6.79)
To test battery life during music playback, we set music to play back in repeat mode at the highest volume level and all other settings at their default and time how long it takes for the battery to die, starting from a full charge. The 5310 did well here, lasting 9 hours and 26 minutes in this test. This is above the average for all the phones we've tested, though it doesn't beat out the LG Chocolate 3 at 11 hours and 24 minutes, but it is better than the Samsung Beat at 7 hours and 34 minutes.

Web Browsing (7.38)
We test web browsing battery life by directing the browser to a test page that refreshes every 10 seconds, and adjust settings to ensure the screen stays on for the duration of the test, and the 5310 lasted 6 hours and 9 minutes in this test. We had some difficulty testing the 5310 since it would save the test pages to its cache, therefore not truly using its data connection regularly and not taxing the battery as much as it would have otherwise, and then error out with a "memory full" error periodically, requiring constant supervision during the testing to restart the browser when this happened. There was no way to change the cache settings to avoid this issue, so the web browsing battery results are probably on the high side compared to what real-life web browsing battery life would be.

Idle Time unscored
In order to complete our reviews in a timely manner, we don't test and score idle time since this can take multiple days or even weeks. The 5310's claimed standby time is up to 12 days. Idle time is largely influenced by cellular signal strength - the further away a phone is from a tower, the harder it works to maintain a connection, which drains the battery more quickly. The 5310 maintained a charge well during our time with it, and we wouldn't expect anyone to have a problem with it in this area.
