18th Dec 07 – The new President and CEO of Sprint is Dan Hesse, a veteran telecoms executive who has worked with Sprint before. Hesse will replace Gary Forsee, who was forced out by the Sprint board of directors in October.
Hesse starts the new job today, shifting from his previous job as the president and CEO of Embarq, a telecoms company that was spun off by Sprint in 2006. Before that, he was CEO of Sprint’s local telecommunications division, so he knows the company and the people. "I am honored and excited to lead Sprint Nextel at this important time in its history," said Hesse in a press release announcing his appointment. He is also not ruling out big changes for the company in the near future, claiming that "we will review every aspect of our strategy as we intend to lead Sprint to the forefront of the wireless industry."
However, he faces a serious challenge in turning around the ailing telecoms company, which has lost a lot of customers in recent months. The company has also invested heavily in a next-generation network using the WiMax technology, which has not yet paid back. Hesse has not yet indicated if he intends to continue this investment, or discontinue or sell off the network.
