The Motorola Razr V3m does not include an email client, however there is web-based support for several popular email services, including AOL, MSN, Yahoo! and Earthlink. Wirelessinfo.com does not award points for web based email clients, as such the Motorola Razr V3m from Sprint scores a 0 on this section. Although more phones are adopting purely web based email services, we feel that there are serious flaws with such services, for example when you don’t have network access you are unable to access your email.

The Motorola Razr V3m does not score any points in this section because of the lack of a built-in email client, but to ensure that we provide full information about usability, we did do our time test using the preset MSN Hotmail web based client. Once the service was already set up with our login and password, average time to a new message was 20.24 seconds, however because of the web-based format this can be significantly impacted by your network coverage.

The Motorola Razr V3m supports AOL, MSN and Yahoo! instant messaging services via Sprint’s Instant Messaging software. Unfortunately each service will cost you $2.99 a month to access and we don't award points for services that charge you for the privilege of using something that should be standard with unlimited data access.
MMS Support (7.0)
The Motorola Razr V3m supports MMS messaging via Sprint’s picture mail service. To access picture mail you need to go to the messaging app and choose picture mail from the list. You are not able to convert a regular SMS message to MMS, which is a shame. You can however create an MMS message from your picture and video browser as well as from the browser preview screen. Overall the Razr V3m provided good MMS functionality, we appreciated the integration across applications, but wish that it was better integrated with SMS messaging.

We were disappointed to discover that the Motorola Razr V3m’s SMS program does not support either the displaying of smiley’s or their automatic insertion. You can of course send a smiley by choosing the appropriate characters.
SMS / MMS Ease of Use (5.0)
Accessing your SMS/MMS messaging applications is quick and easy on the Motorola Razr V3m, just 3 steps get you to the messaging screen where all the pertinent features can be accessed. Once in the messaging program things get a little more clunky, as there are separate sections to access your SMS messages, your MMS messages (which Sprint calls Picture Mail) and then a third section to send a new message of either type. Once you are in a particular section, you have to go back to the messaging list in order to access the others. There is support for sending either MMS or SMS messages to groups. MMS supports video, audio and pictures, however there is no integration between the phone’s voice notes application and MMS, which means that you will have to record a new message if you want to send a voice note.

To test how how easy it was to get to a new text message dialogue we timed how long it took to go from phone closed to a new dialogue. Time to a new message is average on the Motorola Razr V3m, taking an average of 4.58 seconds from closed to a new SMS message dialogue. This is rather slow compared to the Treo 700p, which took only 1.4 seconds, but slightly better than the Motorola Q at 5.1 seconds.
