Motorola RAZR V3m Cell Phone Review - Making/Receiving Calls

Dialing Speed (5.8)
To test dialing speed we test how long it takes to go from closed position to hitting the send button for five different numbers. The Motorola Razr V3m took an average of 4.9 seconds from closed to send. This is fairly quickly for a flip phone that needs to be opened up before you can start dialing.

Talk and End Button (6.0)
The Motorola Razr V3m’s send and end buttons are well placed, directly above he keypad and flanking the directional pad, providing for easy access from either. They are large and we had few errors in trying to hit them, receiving a solid click to confirm our press. Unfortunately the buttons are not easily distinguishable by touch on their own; you have to find them by referencing the surrounding buttons. We prefer buttons that have more depth to them as found on phones with real buttons, however the Razr V3m’s buttons were generally easy to use and we rarely hit the wrong key.

Call Management (5.5)
The Motorola Razr V3m’s call history provides some solid functionality, with call timers organized by incoming/outgoing/missed, easily viewed times and dates, saving numbers either to a new or existing contact and the ability to send a text message to one or multiple callers. Unfortunately the call history only stores your last 20 calls, so forget about recovering a number from a couple of weeks ago, and there are no total call timers available to track your usage.

The Motorola Razr V3m provides a fair selection of in call options, including things like switching to a Bluetooth headset, and access to calendar, contacts and messaging apps. Unfortunately its not as well equipped as some smart phones, but the average user should be fine.

Startup to Call (2.8)
To test startup to call we turn the phone off and then measure how long it takes to start the phone off, dial a number and hit the send keys. We repeat this with 5 different phone numbers in optimal signal conditions. The Motorola Razr V3m Took an average of 35.7 seconds to complete our startup to call test. The majority of the time was spent starting up the phone, with Sprint service connecting quickly in our test environment. You should note that startup time can be significantly impacted by poor service areas. Compared to other handsets the V3m’s times is slightly below average.

Ring Volume (8.8)
To test ring volume we placed the Motorola Razr V3m 4 inches away from a sound pressure meter, set the volume to maximum and choose the loudest ringtone available on the phone. We then call the phone and measure the maximum decibels produced. The V3m scored an impressive 88 decibels on this test. This is as loud as the LG Chocolate, but is significantly louder than most other phones.

Ringtone Customizability (0.0)
The Motorola Razr V3m does not allow you to use music files are ring tones. This is an unfortunately omission on a music oriented phone, but not surprising. Usually only higher end phones like the Treo 750 allow you to use mp3 ring tones.

Non Audio Alerts (10.0)
The Vibrate alert is very easy to recognize, with three quick vibrates for each ring. When all ringers are turned on, the only way to tell that a call is incoming is via the external display, which lights up and shows caller info. We were pleased with the non audio alerts on the Razr V3m, they compare favorably with what is offered by other handsets in its class. The one item missing may be an LED, however LED’s have negative effects on battery life so we can forgive this omission.
