Call Time (3.22)
To test call time we make a call using Skype to the handset and play an audio book to simulate conversation. The Motorola Razr V3m held up for 2:41 in our talk time test. This is below the manufacturer’s estimated talk time of 3 hours, but not significantly. The Razr’s poor talk time is impacted by its relatively small 740 mAh battery. Those who spend many hours on their phone may want to consider a second or extended battery.
Music Playback (3.16)
To test battery performance for music playback we set the phone to play a looped album starting with full power and time how long it takes until the battery dies. The Motorola Razr V3m lasted 4 hours and 23 minutes in our music playback test. This is not an impressive score the Motorola Q lasted 5 hours and 25 minutes while the Palm Treo 700p left the Razr V3m in the dust at 8 hours and 8 minutes. Overall we were disappointed in the Razr V3m’s battery performance, but it is to be expected given the small 740 mAh batter that the handset ships with.
Web Browsing (4.32)
To test battery life while browsing the web we point the phone’s browser at a page that is set up to automatically refresh every 10 seconds. We then press a button on the phone every 30 seconds to ensure that the display does not shut off. In our test the Razr V3m lasted for two hours and twenty-four minutes. This low score is again impacted by the Razr’s relatively small 740 mAh battery. Those who spend a lot of time browsing the web on their device will be disappointed by the Razr’s battery performance in this area.
Idle Time
In order to ensure that we release reviews in a timely manner we do not test standby time. Motorola’s stated standby time is 200 hours.
