Motorola Q 9m Cell Phone Review - Making/Receiving Calls

Dialing Speed (7.07)
The Q 9m could get a call outgoing in 2.83 seconds. This is pretty fast, though we did experience a bit of lag waiting for the number to appear. The Q 9m also has a bit of an advantage because it doesn't need to flip or slide open. The keys are really cramped together, however, meaning dialing will most likely be a bit awkward, especially for those with bigger hands.

We test dialing speed by timing how long it takes us to dial one of our multiple test numbers. We perform this trial multiple times with different numbers each time in order to achieve a more comprehensive average.

Cell Phone Time (sec) Score
Motorola Q 9m 2.83 7.07
Palm Centro 3.62 5.52
Motorola Q 5.8 3.45
Pantech Duo 2.89 6.92
BlackBerry Curve 8320 3.16 6.33
Nokia N95 with 3G 4.62 4.33

Talk and End Buttons (3.0)
The talk and end buttons are located to the left and right of the d-pad array. The keys themselves don't have any notable texture to them, but they're surrounded by easily recognizable boarders such as a raised barrier between them and the rest of the d-pad array, the top of the QWERTY, and the edge of the phone. We didn't like these buttons. They didn't provide much tactile feedback and they felt really squishy. We like more snap in our keys, and a little more to aid touch navigation.

Call Management (6.0)

Call history is located in the start menu. The main list includes all ingoing, outgoing, or missed calls, and can be filtered by this criteria. Entries contain a phone number and a small symbol to distinguish whether it was incoming/outgoing/missed. Clicking on an entry will give a bit more information, such as the time and date of the call, as well as its duration. The menu will also let you check out call and data timers.

When you receive a call, a pop-up will notify you of the caller's number and give you the choice of answering or ignoring. If you deign to pick up, you'll be able to mute the call or pull up a menu with the left and right soft keys. The menu is surprisingly sparse. The only options it contains are mute, speakerphone, view contacts, save to contacts, view calendar, and call history. There was no option to record the call. You could simply press the home screen shortcut and browse to the voice recorder application, but you'll find it doesn't work when you're on a call.

Startup to Call (1.88)
The Q 9m took 53.31 seconds to boot up and make a call. While this is very slow for a normal phone, it's about average for a smart phone -- especially one running a notoriously slow OS like Windows Mobile. Some smart phones take over a minute to boot up, such as the original Q.

Cell Phone Time (sec) Score
Motorola Q 9m 53.31 1.88
Palm Centro 42.66 2.34
Motorola Q 71 1.41
Pantech Duo 43.67 2.29
BlackBerry Curve 8320 7.12 14.04
Nokia N95 with 3G 36.4 2.75

Ring Volume (10.53)
The Motorola Q 9m was capable of 105.3 decibels, which is a good level of output. You should be able to hear your phone ring even if it's in your bag, assuming the ring volume is all the way up.

We test ring volume by holding the handset exactly two inches away from a sound pressure meter. We then cycle through all available ringtones, looking for the maximum decibel output.

Cell Phone Volume (decibels) Score
Motorola Q 9m 105.3 10.53
Palm Centro 109.4 10.94
Motorola Q 103.1 10.31
Pantech Duo 102.8 10.28
BlackBerry Curve 8320 100.5 10.05
Nokia N95 with 3G 105.3 10.53

Ringtone Customizability (8.0)
You can use your own music and voice recordings as ringtones.

Non Audio Alerts (6.0)
Non-audio alerts are a bit weak. First of all, the vibration isn't as strong as we would've liked, but chances are it'll catch your attention if it's in your pocket. The on-screen reminders are incredibly easy to miss. They do light up the screen, but there isn't any sort of animation or eye-catching colors.
