Motorola today launched the Razr v2, the latest iteration of its popular Razr lineup of phones. The new version sports an updated Linux/Java operating system, 2 megapixel camera and an innovative touch sensitive exterior screen that simulates the feeling of real button presses. Motorola has seen a steady decline in its profits and market share. Despite selling 98 million Razr phones Motorola has been hurt by the rapidly decreasing average sale price of these phones. The Razr v2 includes several new features including more expansive built in memory (420MB or 2GB depending on the model), dual QVGA (240 x 320 pixel) displays and MotoSync, a feature that allows users to synchronize contacts and calendars in corporate environments. The Razr v2 is also the first Razr to run on Motorola's Linux/Java platform, although not all models will use the upated operating system. The Razr v2 will come in three versions for GSM only, CDMA/EVDO and GSM/HSDPA networks.
Motorola touted the multimedia featuers of the new phone, including a 2 megapixel camera that supports video sharing on HSDPA networks. Music can be controlled via the external display with the larger internal storage providing space for up to 1000 songs. Music can be loaded onto the phone using Windows Media Player.
Motorola's management recently fought off an attempt by investor Carl Icahn to gain a seat on the companies board. Icahn is known for investing in troubled companies and attempting to initiate changes that quickly create shareholder value. Instead of taking Mr. Icahn's approach Motorola shareholders decided to trust managements turnaround plan. The Razr v2 is an integral part of this plan, along with other recently announced handsets such as the Rizr Z8 and Motorola Q9, which were also touted at today's event.
The Razr v2 will be available initially in Asia in July 2007 with other markets shipping over the summer. There is no information about when the handset will be available in the U.S. or which carrier(s) will offer it.
