Call Time (5.66)
For this test, we call the handset using Skype. We then play a simulated conversation over the line and measure how long the fully charged phone can last before shutting off. The LG Chocolate lasted 4 hours and 43 minutes. This is better than many normal phones. LG claims the Chocolate can last up to 250 minutes while "in use," and our score proves it can go beyond that. The Razr V3m lasted 2 hours and 41 minutes, and the Sanyo M1 lasted 4 hours and 15 minutes. This was more than a two-hour improvement over the old Chocolate.

Cell Phone Talk Time Score
LG Chocolate VX8550 4 hours, 43 minutes 5.66
Sanyo M1 4 hours, 15 minutes 5.10
Motorola Razr V3m 2 hours, 41 minutes 3.22
LG Chocolate VX8500 2 hours, 40 minutes 3.20
Nokia N75 2 hours, 23 minutes 2.86
LG Shine KE970 7 hours, 15 minutes 8.70

Music Playback (10.73)
To test battery's music playback longevity, we play an album that's set to loop continuously. We leave all options default, and close the handset if applicable. The LG Chocolate lasted an incredible 14 hours and 54 minutes. This is virtually double what the Razr V3m is capable of, and far better than the Sanyo M1's 8 hours and 12 minutes.

Cell Phone Music Playback Time Score
LG Chocolate VX8550 13 hours, 55 minutes
10.02
Sanyo M1 8 hours, 12 minutes 8.9
Motorola Razr V3m 4 hours, 23 minutes 3.16
LG Chocolate VX8500 7 hours, 37 minutes 5.48
Nokia N75 5 hours, 36 minutes 4.03
LG Shine KE970 6 hours, 11 minutes 4.45

Web Browsing (3.04)
For Web browsing, we go to a site that refreshes every 10 seconds. We ensure the phone's screen will stay on, either through a setting or manually, and test how long the phone's battery lasts. Here the Chocolate only lasted 2 hours, 32 minutes, which is about an hour worse than the old Chocolate. Clearly LG's 250 minute "in use" battery life estimation wasn't made with browsing in mind. This is comparable to the Razr V3m, but the Sanyo M1 is far superior in this category, lasting almost five hours.

Cell Phone Browsing Time Score
LG Chocolate VX8550 2 hours, 32 minutes 3.04
Sanyo M1 4 hours, 54 minutes 5.88
Motorola Razr V3m 2 hours, 24 minutes 4.30
LG Chocolate VX8500 3 hours, 10 minutes 3.80
Nokia N75 2 hours, 42 minutes 3.24
LG Shine KE970 6 hours, 44 minutes 8.08

Idle Time unscored
In order to ensure that we deliver reviews in a timely fashion we do not test idle time, which can run several days. The Chocolate's manufacturer, LG, claims the Chocolate can last up to 350 hours on idle.
