25th May 2007 – AT&T has said that there won’t be any pre-orders for the iPhone, but you can start to get in line now if you want. The marketing research company The Channel Checkers claims that they have found that many AT&T stores are creating their own waiting lists for Apple’, with some stores having lists of thousands of people already. In their blog post on their research into the iPhone, they claimed that “64% of stores reporting a waiting list (We called 36 stores for this survey). The remaining 36% said sales were on a “first come first serve” basis”. We did our own research into this, calling a number of AT&T dealers and company stores in the Boston area. All of the AT&T owned stores stuck to the company line; they don’t do presales, and the phones will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. Several of the AT&T dealers we called took a different approach, though; they were happy to take our name and number, promising to call us when the iPhone was available. They did say that this was not a pre-sale, though; they were not able to reserve phones, as they had no idea how many phones they were going to receive. Most declined to say how many numbers were on their waiting list, but they did say that there had been a lot of interest.
We also asked the stores if they had any information on the availability of the iPhone, and it seems that they are just as much in the dark as us: several said that they had no idea, while others gave us dates varying from June to August. Most simply said they had no idea. The Channel Checkers report claims that there may be component availability problems, although they don’t cite their sources on this. But they claim that these could limit the number of iPhones available at launch. Whenever that might be…
